What You Need to Know About the U.K.'s New Travel Requirements: ETA Starting January 2025

As a trusted Travel Advisor, we’re committed to keeping you informed about essential travel updates. Starting January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom will implement a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for certain travelers. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, a business trip, or a short-term study visit, here’s everything you need to know about applying for an ETA.

What Is the ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital approval that allows eligible travelers to visit the U.K. for up to six months for tourism, business, or other short-term purposes. It’s also required for those transiting through the U.K., even if you’re not crossing border control.

An ETA is linked to your passport and valid for two years, enabling multiple trips to the U.K. during that period. However, a valid ETA does not guarantee entry—you may still need to see a Border Force officer or use an ePassport gate upon arrival.

Who Needs an ETA?

Travelers who can visit the U.K. without a visa for short stays will need an ETA. This includes:

  • Tourists
  • Business visitors
  • Family and friends visiting
  • Short-term study participants
  • Those on the Creative Worker visa concession (up to 3 months)

If you plan to visit for reasons outside these categories, such as long-term work or marriage, you may need a different visa.

How to Apply for an ETA

Applying for an ETA is a straightforward process. Here’s how:

  1. Take or upload a photo of your passport (the one you’ll use for travel).
  2. Scan your face using a smartphone or device with a camera. (Children aged 9 and under are exempt from this step.)
  3. Take or upload a selfie for verification.
  4. Answer some personal questions to complete your profile.
  5. Pay the £10 fee for your application.

Once submitted, you’ll typically receive a decision within 3 working days, though it can sometimes take longer.

Important: Each traveler, including babies and children, must apply individually. Group applications are not bundled, so decisions may arrive at different times, even if submitted together.

Planning Ahead: Key Tips for Travelers

  • Apply Early: While most applications are processed quickly, don’t wait until the last minute. You can travel while awaiting a decision, but the ETA must be approved before entry.
  • Traveling Frequently? Keep in mind that if your passport changes, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.
  • Stay Within the Rules: The ETA allows stays up to six months but prohibits paid or unpaid work (except under specific conditions) and claiming public benefits.

Cost and Accessibility

The ETA application costs £10 per person, non-refundable. You can apply for others, such as family members, but ensure each traveler has their own approved ETA.
