Oberammergau Passion Play 2020

History

In 1633 the bubonic plague was devastating the area towns and villages in Germany. The townspeople of Oberammergau, in desparation to save their people, made a vow to God that if He spared their people they would perform a Passion Play every ten years to observe, celebrate, and remember His Goodness and Mercy upon their town and its people.

After the vow was made not another inhabitant of the town died of the plague and those that were currently ill recovered from the sickness.

Since that time (the first play was in 1634) the townspeople have performed the Passion play every year that ends in a zero(every decade) and every major anniversay, such as 1984, when it was the 350th anniversay.

The Passion Play

This is a major production put on by the townpeople. As many as half of the occupants perform in the play which tells the story of Jesus' final days leading up to His death, burial, and resurrection. The play is performed daily from Mid-April through early October. The play begins at 2pm and ends at 10:30pm with a 3 hour intermission at dinner time where you'll find some of the participants serving the patrons dinner at the local restaurants.
