It was thought that through this commercialization that smaller travel agencies, like traditional mom and pop storefront locations in your town, would disappear. Many did.
It was thought that the internet would make it so much easier to book travel, to get information about destinations, and make traveling cheaper. It probably did that for a while but today, 20+ years after the internet started to become commercialized, we're seeing a resurgence of people wanting to use a travel agent to help book their vacation.
We get the question nearly daily, "Why should I work with a Travel Agent?" The myth is that travel agents have gone the way of the Dodo bird but we're not extinct, in fact, travel agents are growing in numbers. Travel agents didn't leave the business when the storefront's closed down, they just transitioned to their home. Don't get me wrong. There were some lean years for many in the industry as they struggled to learn a new way of doing business. Yes, the internet had many positive impacts on the travel industry so it wasn't all doom and gloom.
